Bare Necessities | 6 Must-Have Makeup Products

As a busy high school-er, putting on a full face of makeup everyday is very unrealistic. There’s always a few days out of the week where I simply do not feel like spending an extra 20 minutes on makeup. On the lazy days, these are the products I use for a quick, easy fix-up to make myself feel confident, but not overdone.

Don’t get me wrong, I chose to wear makeup to make myself feel comfortable, but if you’re one of those girls who is confident in their own skin, kudos to you! There is nothing more beautiful than bare skin. I love seeing girls who embrace their natural beauty, and truly let their personality shine from the inside out. :)

My first product is is the Ultra Repair Cream by First Aid Beauty. This stuff is my savior during the winter, keeping my skin soft and moisturized. I typically apply this right after I wash my face in the morning, and let it sit for a few minutes to give it a chance to really sink into my skin. This moisturizer not only nourishes my skin, but also provides a great base for my makeup.

My next product is probably my most-needed, otherwise known as concealer. This Garnier concealer doubles to cover up my under-eye dark circles and any redness around my nose. Also, it can cover blemishes and acne scars. I can easily apply and blend this product out with my fingers in seconds. Not only does this concealer serve so many purposes, but makes my job so. much. easier.

Next we have my current obsession, the “Gimme Brow” brow gel by Benefit Cosmetics. Bold brows have been in this fall, and this product is an easy way to tame and fill in your brows in one easy step. This tinted mascara-like substance keeps your brows in place all day and is so easy to apply. I just use the wand to brush through my brows a couple of times, and just like that they look 100 times better. Also, there are little fibers in the gel that actually add volume to your brows. How cool is that?

My fourth product is mascara. Pretty boring, but a definite must-have. This Buxom Lash Mascara gives my lashes volume and length and opens up my eyes. I also love that it’s super black and lasts all day without flaking.

And finally, we move on to lips. My fifth and sixth products are a great combo to keep your lips moisturized, but also give you some color and life. The first product is my favorite lip balm by Nivea. This product’s vanilla scent is the main reason why I love it so much… But, I guess it’s a good lip balm too. :) Next, I layer on a little but of Revlon’s lipstick in “Mauve”. This color looks a little purple, but with the lip balm underneath to sheer it out, it looks more rosy. It adds the perfect flush of color to the lips.

Comfortable, Cute, & Convertible | Vests & Leggings

Vests and leggings, otherwise known as gifts from the Lord above. These comfy essentials are everything. Whether I want to dress casual or cute, vests and leggings can be mixed and matched with many different pieces that are already in my wardrobe to create a variety of looks. Below are two of my favorite ways to style my camel puffer vest and a pair of leggings. I must admit that I probably love this vest a little too much. (But who said that was a bad thing?)

For my casual look, I layered my vest over a simple long sleeve t-shirt and leggings along with some pearl earrings just to add a little sparkle. I threw on my tennis shoes just because they pretty much feel like I’m walking on clouds, but these can easily be substituted for boots or flats.

For my more dressy look, I swapped my t-shirt for a cream sweater and changed into some short brown boots with the prettiest lace detailing… who doesn’t love lace?! I also added a rose gold watch to give the look a little extra bling, in addition to the pearl earrings.

Vest: H&M

Sweater & Boots: TJ Maxx

Watch: Target

Vests and leggings. That is all. :)

Fall Favorites | Nail Polish

Happy November! Fall is in full swing and there’s nothing I love more than seeing the leaves change colors and begin their descent to the ground. From the bright reds and pale oranges to the beautiful yellows that seem to stand out from the rest, I thoroughly enjoy watching the leaves morph into different colors and shapes before winter begins. These beautiful shades of leaves inspired me to share a few of my favorite shades of nail color for fall.

The first nail color on my thumb is called “Berry Naughty” from Essie. To me, having a dark, vampy, blood red for fall and winter is a must. A deep red like this goes with any ensemble and adds a bit of class to any look.

The second nail color on my pointer finger is called “In Stitches”, also from Essie. This pretty cranberry color is perfect for those who are not as daring with their nail polish. I love this color because it’s a shade darker than the average pink, but it’s totally wearable.

The third nail color on my middle finger is called “Lincoln Park After Dark”, from OPI. This color may seem super scary, but I think it’s stunning. It looks like black, but if you look closely it is actually a dark, dark purple. Not only do I love that this color was named after a park in one of my favorite cities, Chicago, but it is also bold and dramatic – perfect for the colder months.

The fourth nail color on my ring finger is called “Metro Chic” from the Sephora by OPI line. I’ve had this color for years, but somehow it is still one of my favorites.  It’s an interesting shade because it is sort of purple, sort of grey, sort of taupe. The cool tone makes it a gorgeous neutral shade.

And finally, the fifth nail color on my pinky is “Cuckoo For This Color” from OPI. The name describes exactly how I feel about this color! This teal green color is a bit brighter than the previous colors, but the shimmer in it catches the light so beautifully. It is a must have for those who prefer to wear something not so dull.

Brown Sugar Lip Scrub & Lip Balm | DIY

Despite today’s beautiful warm weather in Southern Indiana, unfortunately, winter is coming. Winter means colder temperatures, drier air… and chapped lips. Have no fear! With this tasty lip scrub recipe and moisturizing lip balm concoction, you can kiss those dry, chapped lips goodbye… literally.

The ingredients you’ll need for the lip scrub include:

-Coconut Oil (Target / any grocery store)

-Brown Sugar

-Honey

-Almond Extract (optional)

And for the lip balm you’ll need:

-Coconut Oil

-Vitamin E Oil (Hobby Lobby / any craft store)

-Beeswax (Hobby Lobby / any craft store)

In addition, you’ll need tin or plastic containers to store your finished products. I found some at Hobby Lobby for just $10, but anything with a lid will work! To start the lip scrub, measure out a teaspoon of the coconut oil, brown sugar, and honey and combine them in a small bowl. Mix until there are no large clumps of sugar left. If you’d like, you can add a drop or two of almond extract. I chose to add a little bit more sugar, because the sugar is what removes the dead skin from the lips.

Then, fill your containers with the scrub. I applied the scrub and rubbed my lips together for about one minute and then used a tissue to remove the excess. However, the scrub can be eaten off (and it takes very yummy!) Following the scrub, you’ll need a lip balm to moisturize.

First, add two teaspoons of the coconut oil and one teaspoon of shaved beeswax into a microwavable bowl. Microwave the ingredients for about 45 seconds, or until the mixture is a clear liquid. Next, quickly stir in a drop or two of Vitamin E for extra moisture and pour the mixture into your lip balm container. It only takes a few minutes for the balm to set, so this is why you must work quickly! After your balm is set and completely cooled, you can apply as much as you want to your lips. In an attempt to give the balm a rosy color, I added raspberry juice to the mixture before it set. However, it failed to mix with the oil/beeswax combination. So don’t try that :) Even without color, the lip balm is a fabulous follow up to the lip scrub and it also leaves your lips with a glossy finish.

I have already fallen in love with this lip combination and there is no doubt that I will incorporate it into my night time skincare routine. This two-step process is the perfect cure to healing chapped lips and surviving a harsh Indiana winter. :)

Blast from the Past | OOTD

IMG_3951

A long, long time ago when my outfits were styled by my mom, I remember being forced to bring a jacket with me because it might get cold… even if it was 70 degrees out.  If I didn’t wear the jacket, my mom would always say, “Just tie it around your waist!” I remember feeling nerdy and dorky. Let’s just say if I shared any photos of me sporting this look, it would be a humiliating Throwback Thursday. But, maybe my mom was psychic, knowing that this outfit would someday become trendy. Whether or not my mom predicted this trend, wearing a flannel or button up shirt around the waist is all the rage right now.

For this look, I used my jean button up shirt as a way to color block an all-black ensemble. I think using a shirt in this way really separates and defines your top half from your bottom half. It also serves as a way to make the waist seem a bit smaller. (Who doesn’t want that?!) This trend is flattering on any body shape because of the way the shirt flares out, giving a flow-y effect. I also added a dainty gold necklace and my favorite gold bracelet to highlight the gold detailing on the back of my shirt. As for footwear, I slipped on a pair of black booties with gold hardware to tie it all together.

I love this look because it’s so casual, but flattering at the same time. The shirt not only serves as an accessory, but it also serves a real purpose… to provide an extra layer and keep you from getting cold. See mom, I listen to you! …Most of the time. :)

Falling for Fall Fashion

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

F. Scott Fitzgerald accurately depicts exactly how I feel when temperatures cool and my closet transitions from summer clothing to fall clothing. Any season change is an exciting time for fashion, but there’s something about fall that gets every fashionista a little extra excited. It’s a time for women to try out new trends, but still look fashion forward reverting back to their favorite classics. Skirts and sandals are traded for sweaters and boots, my favorite fall staple.

My favorite cable knit sweater goes with absolutely anything, so for this look I chose to pair it with some skinny jeans and black booties to make my legs look just a tad bit longer (I can only hope). I also added a blue statement necklace just to spice things up along with a gold bracelet that I probably wear too often. :) Throughout fall  and winter an outfit like this is my go-to. Not only is it comfortable, but it’s easy to put together at the last minute and it’s super cute.

Welcome to Efflorescent!

Hello all :) & welcome to my blog! I’ve started this website as part of my senior project. I’m a girlie girl at heart, so I’ll be covering mostly fashion and beauty themed posts, as well as sharing fun DIY projects, recipes, etc. Efflorescent means to flower or bloom. I named my blog efflorescent because I think that in a way, everyone is “blooming” and changing as they grow to be amazing individuals. Whether it be changes in style, hair, or even just an outlook on life, everyone goes through phases – good ones and bad ones –  to become who we are destined to be. Thank you so much for visiting my page, feel free to leave comments on anything you would like to see on here! :)
